Family Day Out

Organising the Family Day Out together with our SGC members was a journey of faith for me. Excitement swung to trepidation at times as I realised there was so much more to coordinate. I think I had forgotten that I was no longer as young and had more commitments now than before. What made it worse was that I was battling a few different health issues during the months leading up to the event and had lost my voice.

However, in our weakness, God’s strength is made known. As I look back, there are so many things we can be thankful for. The Lord blessed our SGC with members with different giftings, marketplace experiences and skills to organise this event together. We were very thankful that when the church knew about this event, different church members and youths stepped forward to serve alongside us and others covered us in prayer.

One main prayer request was for good weather. We were so thankful when we met that morning that the weather was good. However, immediately after our thanksgiving and prayer, it started to rain. But the Lord knew what we needed. The rain helped to cool down the place and it stopped at the right time, when we needed to unload the truck full of items we were giving away to the residents. The timing was perfect as it allowed us to unload the huge volume of items smoothly.

When we were sharing our thanksgiving as a SGC, one of our members, Dave, also commented that on that day, there was only one suitable location that would make the unloading from the truck convenient. However, despite our lack of planning for this, God knew and had prepared the way. Dave’s car happened to be parked at that parking lot and when the truck arrived, the driver of the other car parked there also happened to be near his car. This allowed for us to vacate the lots for the truck to be parked there to be unloaded. The parking lots there are usually occupied but God provided us the best lots for the unloading that day to avoid traffic obstruction to other residents. And a similar thing happened when it was time to load up the van at the end of the event. We were so amazed when Dave shared this with us.

During the thanksgiving, Zac also shared his encounter with a 90+ year elderly lady who was lost. He tried to bring her to where she wanted to go, but soon realised that she may have dementia and could not recognise the place anymore. However, by God’s grace, after driving around for a while, the elderly lady managed to guide him to her home in Serangoon Gardens and she could be safely dropped off at home.

We’re thankful that despite our initial worry that the residents wouldn’t come and later that the food and prizes would be insufficient, God provided more than enough for the nearly 400 residents who came. The turnout was a huge encouragement to all the helpers and we praise God that the residents enjoyed themselves and learned more about what BCS does.

As I look back, it is in our weakness and inadequacies that He is magnified. He provided for this event in ways we couldn’t imagine — and it has been a big encouragement to our SGC. To God be the glory!
